Ok, so tonight I got round to testing all the bits I got to make sure they are in working order.
The good news is as far as I can tell the servos seem fine.
The problem seems to be the Servotor32 board. It came with 1.6 firmware and I seem unable to update it. I can communicate with the board fine, and use it and pomoco to test the servos.
Also, while testing the servos I could not get a full 90 degree rotation at 500, but I could at 2500. All the servos stopped at about 45 degrees at 500. Is that a problem with the 1.6 firmware, or a problem with the board? It happened with all the servos, and it happens on all the pins on the board.

So it looks like the board does not respond to the serial commands during programming. 
I’ve tried different cables, different USB ports and different COM ports.
