looking to buy as a xmas gift for bright 13 yr old with no robot or programming experience. Should it be hexy or sparky? or something else altogether.

Definitely Sparki.
Hexy is meant as an intro for advanced robotics, so there’s an assumed basic amount of knowledge.
Sparki however is meant for someone who’s never programmed or built a robot, and comes with tons of tutorials on how to do lots of cool things:
