How to Control Hexy Movements?

  • 2 or more joysticks : quick easy way to see Hexy moving
  • Sliders per leg or servo : awesome control, but might take a while to get Hexy across the room
  • Code editor window : advanced users, maybe upload code from computer
  • Sliders + Recording : allowing you to create a routine or dance
  • Other : I am writing my thoughts below

As I think about this remote, there are multiple ways to control Hexy. What would be some ways you would want to control Hexy?

If I had the skills I would hack a music step sequencer to control the servos. Similar to the Tenori-on. Once the movement sequence is created save them to a macro that can be called by a push of a button.

Each line would represent a servo. The main difference would be that each button would be a set amount of rotation per servo up or down. (so you don’t have the servo trying to do a 180 turn in half a second)

Can we use multitouch gestures on my Android or ipad to make control.

@Grailx3 - I love the idea of Hexy moving to music. I doubt I will be able to make it work directly with Tenori-on. But possibly make it listen to music playing in the app, or environmental sounds (will need to research this). Make him dance / move to sounds by connecting legs to different sound settings (will research which sound variables I can connect to). Gonna spend some time on this. Thanks for the contribution!

@leochan - I think that is a very interesting. Thinking of swipes, pinching, etc. Do you have any thoughts on what gestures would comfortably connect to Hexy movements? I will try to come up with some ideas, but always good to have multiple brains with different views thinking about it. Thanks!

How about linking the gyros in the iPhone to hexy movement? i.e. When turning the iPhone around Hexy Turns. Then only need one ‘joystick’ to control movement fwd/bck etc.

I like that. Which is more comfortable to use:

  • hold it vertically like the mario cart steering wheel?
  • hold it horizontally and you physically turn and it turns? yea… sounds goofy after I wrote it, but leaving it in there to have a choice.

what about buttons like gas peddle and reverse? instead of the joystick.

why not have a calibrate option that would zero out the gyro data to how you are currently holding it?

for another option maybe a dual d-pad style? one for forward/back/strafe left/strafe right and the other for turn left/turn right (not sure what to do with the extra up/down axis there, maybe hook it to the “head” sensor servo)

I found what I was looking for that may serve as a decent customizable interface for the Hexy on iOS.

You could also use tank style steering and have it strafe when you push both joysticks left and right. Maybe have it lean if you only push one joystick left/right.

Have you gotten anywhere with the IOS app? In other words, do we have something that might control the HEXY via the iPhone/iPad? Thanks.

I would also be interested in this. Either iOS or Android. Have both for robotics development stuff.
