Reliable Hexapod ?

Hello there,
I’d really like to get into robotics and playing around with them, especially hexapods, they really fascinate me ,
because they appear so , dont know , real life :smiley:
I saw many selfbuilt hexapods on youtube, and they all look great , but either they are completly selfbuild and selfdesigned,
or they were really , really expensive ( 1000 plus )
then I found hexy, and i was wow i wnat this !
But then i read a bit through the forums and found out that many of yours had defect servos , or they destroyed themselves rteally fats.
I dont want to risk to spent my money (250 euros is much for a student ) to get something thats not working or cripples fast…
I read some posts were people didnt even complete the build and the servos were already dead…
Now i just wanted to ask , if hexy is a reliable hexapod , or if its lowcost-lowquality-notdurable… ?

I have found that mine works pretty well and holds up great if you aren’t putting a lot of stress on the servos
and also worst comes to worst you can buy replacement servos at your local hobby shop

Hexy is definitely a reliable little dude. But like qxtman said, you need to be careful with how you use him. If you’re running the regular pomoco moves then you most likely wont stress any of the servos enough to break them, but once you start writing your own code and testing it you may well end up breaking a few. I ended up buying a full set of the Turnigy metal gear servos you’ll see posted in another thread on here, after breaking so many of the plastic ones while writing my own code for him. I think roboalchemist said he was trying to contact the seller of the better servos for a bulk order, but havent seen any updates on that since. As far as the body goes, he’s definitely capable of taking a beating. Though I wouldn’t make a habit of it. I only cracked one piece while testing, and only because he had a mishap with some stairs. Definitely a great starter kit, take it from me, I’m a starter :stuck_out_tongue:

Overall it is reliable, but buy a bunch of metal gear servos, especially for the leg servo, they get the most stress. I’ve blown over 10 servos and most were leg servos. Second were hip servos. Only 1 ankle/foot servo went and they all had the same problem, the plastic gears stripped. If you don’t stress them, you can stay with the servos that it comes with, but I would buy a few metal geared servos from a place like Hobby King just in case.
